"The contemporary artist, in the unfolding journey of their research, plays at least two fundamental roles: one is interpreting the world around them, and the other is discovering methods that can further expand their field of vision, contributing to a greater and more refined expressive ability.
This is the case with Domenico Caliri and Tonino Miano—bound by a friendship spanning well over three decades—who engage with equal interest on both the 'acoustic' and 'electric' planes. The terms here are used in their most simplistic sense, as the guitar-piano pairing still involves an amplified electric guitar, and the electric pairing is often characterized in detail by the introduction of acoustic samples that coexist in a fragmented, often hybrid, fabric. Hence the title of this project, which encapsulates the subtleties implicit within it: 'Strings' and 'Currents,' indeed.
One a guitarist with a predominantly jazz background, the other a classically trained pianist more inclined toward free improvisation, both have for years been driven beyond the sonic limits imposed by their respective instruments, calling upon the use of synths, objects, pedals, and samples to stir up the plane of the audible. Strings - Currents is simultaneously a meeting point and a point of divergence of these two worlds, equally belonging to the same duo, but which, by their intrinsic existence on different planes, seem to originate from different points of the creative space, as if belonging to separate sources.
This is also the duo's provocation: to position themselves on either side of a boundary line, a demarcation of styles. One can conceive of creative realities for whose reconciliation a significant leap is necessary, and if it is possible for the musician, it should also be possible for the listener."
"L’artista contemporaneo, nel dipanarsi del proprio percorso di ricerca, riveste almeno due ruoli fondamentali: uno è il suo farsi interprete del mondo che lo circonda, l’altro è scoprire metodi che possano ulteriormente espandere il suo campo visivo, contribuendo ad una maggiore e più raffinata capacità espressiva.
E’ il caso di Domenico Caliri e Tonino Miano - legati da un’amicizia lunga ben oltre tre decenni - che si confrontano con equo interesse sia sul piano “acustico” che “elettrico”. I termini qui vengono usati in una loro accezione semplicistica, in quanto il binomio chitarra-pianoforte si avvale comunque di una chitarra elettrica amplificata, e il binomio elettrico è spesso caratterizzato nel dettaglio dall’introduzione di campionamenti acustici che coabitano un tessuto frastagliato spesso ibrido. Da qui il titolo di questo progetto, che racchiude le sottigliezze implicite all’interno di esso: “corde” e “correnti” appunto.
Chitarrista l’uno di estrazione prevalentemente jazzistica, pianista l’altro di formazione classica e più legato all’improvvisazione libera, ma da anni entrambi spinti oltre i limiti sonori imposti dai loro rispettivi strumenti, per chiamare in causa altri piani di udibilità espressiva possibili attraverso l’utilizzo di synths, oggetti, pedali e campionamenti, Strings - Currents è contemporaneamente incontro e punto di divergenza di questi due mondi, ugualmente appartenenti allo stesso duo ma che, per il loro intrinseco esistere su piani differenti, sembrano provenire da punti diversi dello spazio creativo, come quasi appartenenti a sorgenti separate.
Anche questa vuole essere la provocazione del duo: collocarsi al di qua e al di là di una linea di confine, di demarcazione di stili. Si possono concepire realtà creative per la conciliazione delle quali è necessario un salto di entità non indifferente che, se è possibile per il musicista, dovrebbe essere possibile anche per l’ascoltatore."

DOMENICO CALIRI - Guitarist and Composer
Active on the international scene for over thirty years, he made his debut in the international jazz scene with the group Rava Electric Five, led by trumpeter Enrico Rava. He has performed at numerous festivals across Europe, Canada, China, Japan, and the United States with various projects, including: Rava Electric Five, Rava-Carmen, Dedalo Guitar Project, in addition to his own projects such as Cal Trio, Callunaire Solo Project, Specchio Ensemble, and the ensemble Camera Lirica.
In 1993, he was one of the founders of the Bassesfere Collective, an artistic reference in Bologna for improvised and avant-garde music in the 1990s.
He has recorded around 70 CDs for important record labels (Soul Note, Label Bleu, Caligola Records, Enja, Dodicilune, etc.).
He has composed numerous orchestral scores commissioned by various institutions, including the "Angelica" International Music Festival, Orchestra & Choir "Camerata Bern", Orquestra Sinfonica Portuguesa of Lisbon, etc.
Since the '90s, he has collaborated with some of the most renowned improvisers, including Lester Bowie, Han Bennink, Kenny Wheeler, Antonello Salis, Ares Tavolazzi, Richard Galliano, Michel Godard, Butch Morris, Fred Frith, John Oswald, Adam Rudolph, Stefano Bollani, Ares Tavolazzi, Gianluca Petrella, Francesco Cusa, Livio and Pino Minafra, Cristina Zavalloni, and others.
He is a tenured professor of Jazz Guitar at the G.B. Martini Conservatory in Bologna.

Attivo sulla scena internazionale da oltre trent'anni, ha esordito nella scena jazzistica internazionale con il gruppo Rava Electric Five del trombettista Enrico Rava. Ha suonato in numerosi festival in Europa, Canada, Cina, Giappone e Stati Uniti con vari progetti, tra cui: Rava Electric Five, Rava-Carmen, Dedalo Guitar Project, oltre ai propri progetti, tra i quali: Cal trio, Callunaire solo project, Specchio Ensemble e l’ensemble Camera Lirica.
Nel 1993 è stato tra i fondatori del Collettivo Bassesfere, riferimento artistico bolognese della musica improvvisata e d'avanguardia degli anni ’90.

TONINO MIANO - Pianist, Composer, Educator, Author and Visual Artist
He is classically trained with a degree in Classical Piano Performance with maximum honors from the V. Bellini Conservatory in Caltanissetta (Italy), and a B.A. in Musicology from the University of Bologna, but has always nurtured acts of spontaneous music creation that often cross stylistic boundaries.
As a teenager he had a passion for science that eventually brought him as far as getting a degree in Physics in his thirties.
From 2006 to 2013 he ran his own record label (Impressus Records) and was the co-curator (with Frantz Loriot) of the Avant Post, a monthly series of new music/improvisation at Temple M in New York City.
He’s the leader or co-leder of numerous recordings the last of which is Human Pieces with F. Cusa, R. Grosso and B. Groder (Leo records), and has performed extensively in the US and Italy.
He’s also the author of the highly praised Non-Tonal Technical Studies for Piano (nontonalpiano.com).
After spending half of his life in New York City he has now relocated to Catania where he's a permanent fixture of the Francesco Cusa Trio.

È un musicista di formazione classica conseguendo il diploma in Pianoforte Classico con il massimo dei voti dal Conservatorio V. Bellini di Caltanissetta e una laurea in Musicologia presso l'Università di Bologna, ma ha sempre coltivato atti di creazione musicale spontanea che spesso attraversano confini stilistici.
Da adolescente ha nutrito una passione per la scienza, che lo ha poi portato a conseguire in età più avanzata una laurea in Fisica al City College di New York.
Dal 2006 al 2013 ha fondato e gestito una sua etichetta discografica (Impressus Records) ed è stato co-curatore (con Frantz Loriot) di Avant Post, una serie mensile di nuova musica/improvvisazione al Temple M di New York City.
È leader o co-leader di numerosi cd, l'ultimo delle quali è Human Pieces con F. Cusa, R. Grosso e B. Groder (Leo Records), e si è esibito ampiamente negli Stati Uniti e in Italia.
È anche autore dei molto apprezzati Non-Tonal Technical Studies for Piano (nontonalpiano.com).
Dopo aver trascorso metà della sua vita a New York City, si è ora trasferito a Catania, dove è una presenza fissa del Francesco Cusa Trio.
