Andrea Melani (drums), Riccardo Grosso (double bass), Tonino Miano (piano, synths, composition).

Luminary  (light giving body, celestial object) is my most recent trio project for which I have the pleasure to be working with two great and versatile musicians. The project is an exploration into an organic approach to improvisation that flirts with non-acoustic sounds often used  in a kind of symbiosis with the acoustic instruments. We think of three parallel paths that are independent in principle but communicating at a distance. Sounds permeate the fabric of the trio' space as an inherent part of the same world without any of the individual components of it necessarily sharing the same exact spot at any given moment. The music is open, multi-stylistic  and unattached to a particular idiom though one could certainly place it within the margins of "modern jazz".

Nicola Barin, Percorsi Musicali. https://www.percorsimusicali.eu/2024/09/29/tonino-miano-trio-luminary/

"Throughout Luminary, Tonino Miano often takes chances and stretches out while somehow making the music very melodic and pretty at the same time. Riccardo Grosso and Andrea Melani give him the kind of exquisite support that only amplifies that prettiness." V. Aaron, Something Else! https://somethingelsereviews.com/2024/10/04/tonino-miano-trio-luminary-2024/

The Box is a collaboration in which Francesco Cusa (drums) and Tonino Miano (keyboards/electronics) weave the thread of a musical discourse that draws inspiration from the multiple experiences that characterize their varied life paths. These experiences converge in a multi-stylistic play without filters in which the sound image is constantly evolving and it creates the conditions for its intercession from one landscape to another. The idea of a journey between the familiar and the unknown comes to mind while listening to their musical plot, which morphs from a pulsating acid jazz to a meditative ambient, from almost orchestral textures to pointillistic sparks in which the forms - malleable until that moment - disintegrate to produce an image that manifests itself in its outmost immediacy, stripped of all its expressive linearity. This is a duo that does not filter ideas but opens up widely to welcome the unknown and often the uncomfortable, chasing the idea wherever it may lead so that a new discovery might be accessed; a different way of listening to music and to each other.

Leo Records CD 925. Recorded in Catania at StudioTape on Feb 2021. Recording engineer Franz Minuta. Cover art by N. Schiro, F. Ozaneaux, T. Grassia, T. Miano. Produced by Leo Feigin and Tonino Miano. "...a truly stimulating album with some extraordinary moments in it" - Lynn Rene' Bailey https://artmusiclounge.wordpress.com/2022/03/18/an-eclectic-quartets-human-pieces/

"È un gran bel disco questo [...] che si riascolta volentieri, apprezzandolo dall’inizio alla fine in tutte le componenti che lo costituiscono, senza momenti a vuoto o cadute di tensione." - musicZoom http://www.musiczoom.it/?p=32969

"Human Pieces is an album of fresh music which is not afraid to step into the unknown of exploration, but clearly wishes to avoid falling into the trap of rediscovering musical clichés. This it does extraordinarily well and so it is unusually stimulating and thought-provoking". - Ken Cheetham, Jazz Views. https://www.jazzviews.net/cusa--groder--grosso--miano---human-pieces.html

- Nicola Barin, Percorsi Musicali. https://www.percorsimusicali.eu/2022/04/24/human-pieces/

"Some pieces are so beautiful that it hurts". – Stef Gijssels.

"The Inner Life of Residue, in fact, is a musical example of how life freely evolves, thanks to the attention and collaborative interaction with others, transforming itself, reviving itself, giving rise to new realities. A splendid example.” - N. Polastri, AllAboutJazz Italia 2014.

"Almost like performance art without the pretension, this has that special something that you want to hear when you just want to be entranced by some well played music."– Midwest Record

"Mirio Cosottini and Tonino Miano find a wealth of ideas that spring forth from just a trumpet and a piano". ~ S. Victor Aaron, Something else!

"The country of FluiDensity is humane, quick-thinking, playful, fleet, inquisitive, earthy. “The soul that animates this music is sui generis: a mixture of interchangeable franticness, melodic research outside the customary databank canons and free jazz devoid of luxury clothes. I did manage to find a sort of disguised root in the couple’s methodological approach, which lies somewhere between the semi-serious fringes of post-RIO and – in selected circumstances – Goebbels & Harth’s technically evolved recklessness. Still, the manumission of improvisational clichés and the juxtaposition of different kinds of ironically rigorous dissent fuse in an entirely satisfying statement, whose temperament and personality are quite unique.” - Massimo Ricci, Touching Extremes 2010
